I am writing this post today instead of having written it yesterday after my visit to the BMT clinic. My original intent was to write it this afternoon after having seen Dr. Harris about some possible treatment of my right eye to correct the excess drainage of tears from the eye, but we have been hit by such an intense snow storm that I have called his office and postponed my appointment until the morning of March 16. The snow storm has either ended or is near ending but it left about 6 inches of snow on top of 2 inches from a storm yesterday. I shoveled a narrow path out to bring in the newspaper, but decided to wait for Kevin to come do our driveways and sidewalks. I told the receptionist at Dr. Harris' office that my family doesn't want me to shovel so much snow and she said she wouldn't want her father do so either. Nancy and Mike have been giving us snow removal as a gift for Christmas for several years and Kevin probably will be happy to come because it has been such a light winter that he has been here only once.
Yesterday my appointment at the clinic was at 10:00, I had forgotten the time and set the alarm as though it was to be at 10:30, but I awakened early and got up and when I saw the snow on our deck I was glad that I was up early. Our driveways were warm enough that they did not require shoveling so I lingered over breakfast and then drove as fast as I could in the pickup to get to the clinic on time. My nurse was Kristy again and she very promptly put a line in my port and drew 2 vials of blood to send off and said that I should be out early. When the report arrived she printed a copy for me and told me she had ordered the Velcade and I would be leaving soon, but at 11:30 one of the ladies from the registration area came to take orders for lunch and I ordered a ham sandwich, which didn't arrive until Kristy had started the Velcade. infusion. Emma was happy to share the sandwich with me.
I started talking to the man in the next chair while waiting for the lab results because he said he recognized me as having been around for quite awhile and asked how long I had been coming. I told him I started in July 2009 and in return asked how long he had been coming, but didn't actuallyknow that I had seen him previously. He started coming in 2007 and was now down to return visits every six. months. His cancer had been diagnosed when he started suffering broken bones and lesions at various places. He is much younger than me, but looks healthy now; He was there for an Aredia infusion, which he said he gets every three months. I get those with the same frequency and there are other similarities with our illness and treatments and I enjoyed talking to him.
